About This Quote

He listened to their opinions, stated his own, and supported them with reasons. From his being constantly occupied with such meditations, it resulted, that when in command no complication could ever present itself with which he was not prepared to deal. During the time of the first Punic war, Fabius Maximus Rutilius was appointed dictator by the Roman Senate. While he was in office he had an opportunity to become a great general.

He attended diligently to the duties of his high office, but he never left these duties to undertake any other. He was always able to make up his mind fully on every subject with which he was entrusted, and he never allowed himself to be diverted from the thread of his duty by any matter occurring in camp or at Rome.
